Artist Statement
I am trained as an architect and have been fascinated by printmaking since I was young, with Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Young Hare’ in my room growing up. I’ve explored wood block printing but have mostly worked with copper etchings. Recently I’ve been producing monoprints using multiple square plates, which allow me to rotate and combine them in a variety of ways. In addition to traditional prints I’ve transformed some into three dimensional book works that allow motion and interaction. My recent prints are primarily abstract meditations on visual space and color. Some are fantastic alternatives to buildings and landscapes that I have designed or imagined.
I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelors in Architecture and Fine Arts. In the years since, I’ve practiced Architecture and explored many art forms. I’ve recently produced a series of monoprints using multiple plates which allowed me to rotate and combine images in a variety of ways and layers. Using aquatint and drypoint and ultimately chin collé. My most recent monotypes are inspired by a series of elliptical jewelry that my mother, Lynn Porter, made from silver with inlay of ebony and walnut woods in the 1950’s.
